Dog genome will help cancer research
The complete canine genome sequence has been found and "many researchers are hopeful that the dog genome will reveal important genes behind the cancers that afflict us and our closest companions."
So far German Shepherds have helped us learn more about kidney cancer causing genes:

Let's hope we make progress real fast...for humans and doggies alike.
Did you know? Bone cancer, skin cancer, and lymphoma are among the many types of cancers that are similar in humans and dogs.

My dog ate my Modern Pooch homework!
Very sorry, folks...in the exciting reunion of me and Sparky (in CA) she accidentally ate all that I need to post to Modern Pooch. Please bear with us while we fix the problem...and in the meantime, give your pooches the extra loving they deserve this holiday season!
Thanks for your patience and Happy Holidays!

Stella the Boston Terrier
Stella is an all-American squeaky ball champion, fetching the ball at speeds John can only dream of wind-sprinting. Her favourite snacks are provolone soy cheese and turkey. In addition, this sturdy 17 lb madam enjoys nibbling underwear and taking on Mastiffs at the dog run.

Thanks to Louise and John Pollack for giving us Stella!

Brownie the Chihuahua
He may be small, but is big in personality! We call him a sock thief, because every time you try to put your socks on, he runs off with one and dances around the room with it. He is very sweet natured and loves to cuddle and give kisses.

Thanks Tracy for the cute, cute, cute Chhihuahua!

Neiko & Calyope the Basset Hounds
Neiko (on the left) is a recent rescue from New England Basset Hound Rescue. He's absolutely wonderful (and quite lazy and stubborn too). We've had Calyope since she was a puppy. She's just as wonderful, but has a bit more... spunk.

Thanks to Jason & Heidi for this great picture that captures the Basset Hound spirit beautifully!

Afterall, dogs don't talk back!
Can you relate to this excerpt?
When we talked back, our parents threatened us with military school, but they applaud their dog's incessant yapping as "feistiness." We got grounded when we trashed the house while they were away. When the dog destroys the furniture when left alone even briefly, they count it a poignant sign of devotion.
Then you're most likely an ACDL: Adult Child of a Dog Lover...in need of a support group...and of relating to the entire article.
An interesting discovery from this article is UPenn's School of Veterinary Medicine's Center for the Interaction of Animals and Society. Their commendable goals are the following:
1. Study the positive and negative influence of people’s relationships with animals on their physical and mental health and well being.
2. Investigate the impact of these relationships on the behavior and welfare of the animals involved.
3. Encourage constructive, balanced, and well-informed debate and discussion on the ethics of animal use.
4. Use the knowledge and information gained from this work to benefit people, and promote the humane use and treatment of animals.
Good luck to ACDLs & the CIAS!

Dexter, Willy, Pepper & Del the Dachshunds
Caution: Amazing stories lie ahead...
Pepper, the little black and tan in the middle of the picture, adopted us where we used to live. He had severe teeth problems that we had corrected but it might not have been soon enough for him, since he died 9 years later at 12 yrs of age of chest cancer. Willy, the chocolate-colored one, was adopted from the local humane society, and has a confidence problem, along with anxiety attacks which lead to epileptic-like seizures. We just make sure he doesn't know when the mailman comes, and he seems to do fine. Del, the red one, is similar to Nunu in your story of The Dog Whisperer. He didn't like anyone at first, then only me and now recently, is being loving to everyone. It just took tons of love to get him to trust again. He suffers from epilepsy, but his seizures are getting further apart and thus far, doesn't need meds for it. Finally, Dexter, the other black and tan. He was rescued along with Del, but was so emaciated, he was a walking coma. Del and Dexter are inseparable. I feel my boys are very extraordinary, in that, they defied all the odds against them, abandonment, suffering and disease, in their search to their now happy home.

Tish, Modern Pooch thanks you for submitting this story and photo and for being an incredible friend to Dachshunds.

Sheriff the German Shepherd
Sheriff was rescued after he was dumped at an animal shelter in neighboring state. Through one of those six degrees of separation things, we were fortunate enough to have him come into our lives in July of 1999. He was extremely shell-shocked from traumatic experiences earlier in his life...if you raised your voice AT ALL, he would immediately lie down on the floor and start to pee. Fortunately, he's come a long way now and is enjoying the life of a senior dog (our vet estimates he's about ten years old).

Thanks so much Peter for rescuing and sharing Sheriff with us!

Dogs are Donors too!
Wow. Dogs are blood donors too!

Madeleine, a 7-year-old retired racing greyhound, is one of the regulars at the blood bank. "She's been doing it two or three years," says her owner, Marianne McKiernan, of Denver. "We've been lucky because we've never had a dog face a crisis. But others aren't so lucky. And this is an easy thing for us to do."
Did you know?
"Greyhounds are among the favored breeds when it comes to canine blood donors. Their easy demeanor and short hair make drawing blood a snap. And 95 percent of them have A- blood, the universal blood type for dogs."

Louis XIV the Pomeranian
Louis XIV was named for his striking resemblance to the Hapsburg King (in both looks and disposition). As Louis' father says, "Look out, ladies, for the King of France!"
Although Louis definitely won the prize for "cutest pulling off of an injury," Modern Pooch is very happy to know that Louis' leg is now healed. More photos and videos of the King can be seen at Postmasters Gallery in NYC.

I say, Louis for President!!
Thanks Rachel!

Dogs at the Office = Win, Win.
Attention unemployed dog lovers!
Narrow your job search by looking for companies where everyday is a "Bring your dog to work day!" You may end up at a firm in which dogs at the office are their key to success!

Are our Pets Worth it?
Well of course they are but how about this behavior excerpted from this article?!
"I had a client who had a Harley Davidson and a Staffordshire bull terrier. When the dog's tooth broke, they wanted a crown made in stainless steel to match their Harley." Then there was the client with a show dog who ordered a gold crown and another woman who requested three implants for her house pooch to "improve its smile".

Toffee Hendrix the Cocker Spaniel
Toffee is not your average cocker spaniel. He is cool. This is due to his fluffyness. We dont show or style Toffee. We give him a traditional cocker cut but try to keep him as fuzzy as possible because fuzzy wuzzy wuz a bear. This increases the cute-factor. By keeping the fluffometer at an all time high, Toffee rises above his breed in the most important area, hugability.

Thanks for sharing your fuzzy friend, Carlton!

Animal Lawsuits are no Barking Matter
There was a time when it seemed outrageous for a recently split up couple to fight for dog custody in court. Well, that time is not now, folks. More and more people are seeking justice through animal lawsuits and hence, more and more universities are offering Animal Law classes.
Did you know that Bob Barker has given $1 million endowments to Columbia, Duke, Stanford and UCLA for the study of Animal Law?
"We love our own animals," Barker says, "but we don't seem to be aware of the mistreatment and exploitation of other animals."
Who knew Bob was such a wise, wise man and a great friend of the animals?? Go Bobby!

Paralyzed Pooches no more!?!
Scientists have started reversing paralysis in dogs!
This dachshund Oscar was injured in a serious accident and was confined to a wheel cart until given shots of PEG, a chemical cousin of anti-freeze.
"I used to make fun of him, saying he walks like a drunken sailor," said Oscar's owner, Dan Paulin of Boonville, Ind. "I don't think he'll ever be normal, but at least he's not confined to the wheel cart."

Uuuummm, excuse me but Oscar's paralyzed not deaf!!

You can lick my face anyday, Annie.
