Dog genome will help cancer research
The complete canine genome sequence has been found and "many researchers are hopeful that the dog genome will reveal important genes behind the cancers that afflict us and our closest companions."
So far German Shepherds have helped us learn more about kidney cancer causing genes:

Let's hope we make progress real fast...for humans and doggies alike.
Did you know? Bone cancer, skin cancer, and lymphoma are among the many types of cancers that are similar in humans and dogs.

My dog ate my Modern Pooch homework!
Very sorry, folks...in the exciting reunion of me and Sparky (in CA) she accidentally ate all that I need to post to Modern Pooch. Please bear with us while we fix the problem...and in the meantime, give your pooches the extra loving they deserve this holiday season!
Thanks for your patience and Happy Holidays!

Stella the Boston Terrier
Stella is an all-American squeaky ball champion, fetching the ball at speeds John can only dream of wind-sprinting. Her favourite snacks are provolone soy cheese and turkey. In addition, this sturdy 17 lb madam enjoys nibbling underwear and taking on Mastiffs at the dog run.

Thanks to Louise and John Pollack for giving us Stella!

Brownie the Chihuahua
He may be small, but is big in personality! We call him a sock thief, because every time you try to put your socks on, he runs off with one and dances around the room with it. He is very sweet natured and loves to cuddle and give kisses.

Thanks Tracy for the cute, cute, cute Chhihuahua!

Neiko & Calyope the Basset Hounds
Neiko (on the left) is a recent rescue from New England Basset Hound Rescue. He's absolutely wonderful (and quite lazy and stubborn too). We've had Calyope since she was a puppy. She's just as wonderful, but has a bit more... spunk.

Thanks to Jason & Heidi for this great picture that captures the Basset Hound spirit beautifully!

Afterall, dogs don't talk back!
Can you relate to this excerpt?
When we talked back, our parents threatened us with military school, but they applaud their dog's incessant yapping as "feistiness." We got grounded when we trashed the house while they were away. When the dog destroys the furniture when left alone even briefly, they count it a poignant sign of devotion.
Then you're most likely an ACDL: Adult Child of a Dog Lover...in need of a support group...and of relating to the entire article.
An interesting discovery from this article is UPenn's School of Veterinary Medicine's Center for the Interaction of Animals and Society. Their commendable goals are the following:
1. Study the positive and negative influence of people’s relationships with animals on their physical and mental health and well being.
2. Investigate the impact of these relationships on the behavior and welfare of the animals involved.
3. Encourage constructive, balanced, and well-informed debate and discussion on the ethics of animal use.
4. Use the knowledge and information gained from this work to benefit people, and promote the humane use and treatment of animals.
Good luck to ACDLs & the CIAS!

Dexter, Willy, Pepper & Del the Dachshunds
Caution: Amazing stories lie ahead...
Pepper, the little black and tan in the middle of the picture, adopted us where we used to live. He had severe teeth problems that we had corrected but it might not have been soon enough for him, since he died 9 years later at 12 yrs of age of chest cancer. Willy, the chocolate-colored one, was adopted from the local humane society, and has a confidence problem, along with anxiety attacks which lead to epileptic-like seizures. We just make sure he doesn't know when the mailman comes, and he seems to do fine. Del, the red one, is similar to Nunu in your story of The Dog Whisperer. He didn't like anyone at first, then only me and now recently, is being loving to everyone. It just took tons of love to get him to trust again. He suffers from epilepsy, but his seizures are getting further apart and thus far, doesn't need meds for it. Finally, Dexter, the other black and tan. He was rescued along with Del, but was so emaciated, he was a walking coma. Del and Dexter are inseparable. I feel my boys are very extraordinary, in that, they defied all the odds against them, abandonment, suffering and disease, in their search to their now happy home.

Tish, Modern Pooch thanks you for submitting this story and photo and for being an incredible friend to Dachshunds.

Puppy Purses
I'm really not so sure this puppy purse looks comfortable for puppy! I don't think most pooches like their legs dangling in space!

It's definitely a cute way for dog owners to travel though!

Sheriff the German Shepherd
Sheriff was rescued after he was dumped at an animal shelter in neighboring state. Through one of those six degrees of separation things, we were fortunate enough to have him come into our lives in July of 1999. He was extremely shell-shocked from traumatic experiences earlier in his life...if you raised your voice AT ALL, he would immediately lie down on the floor and start to pee. Fortunately, he's come a long way now and is enjoying the life of a senior dog (our vet estimates he's about ten years old).

Thanks so much Peter for rescuing and sharing Sheriff with us!

Dogs are Donors too!
Wow. Dogs are blood donors too!

Madeleine, a 7-year-old retired racing greyhound, is one of the regulars at the blood bank. "She's been doing it two or three years," says her owner, Marianne McKiernan, of Denver. "We've been lucky because we've never had a dog face a crisis. But others aren't so lucky. And this is an easy thing for us to do."
Did you know?
"Greyhounds are among the favored breeds when it comes to canine blood donors. Their easy demeanor and short hair make drawing blood a snap. And 95 percent of them have A- blood, the universal blood type for dogs."
